We partnered with Morriston Hospital - Swansea Bay UHB, for our month-long initiative, The Continence Care Challenge. This collaborative effort focused on enhancing continence care across three key wards which had seen new starters, leveraging our expertise and innovative training methods to empower nursing staff with greater knowledge and practical skills.

Objectives

Improve knowledge: Equip nursing staff with up-to-date best practices in continence care.

Enhance patient outcomes: Foster focus in patient comfort, dignity, and care outcomes through evidence-based approaches regarding specifically incontinence.

Evaluate effectiveness: Assess the impact of training through surveys and feedback from nurses.

Approach

To achieve these objectives, we designed a targeted training program delivered in multiple one-hour session options over the course of the month. This approach ensured the training was digestible, focused, and could be implemented alongside the nurses' demanding schedules.

To evaluate effectiveness, we used pre and post ward and training surveys that was centred on knowledge and patient-based outcomes.

Results

1. Knowledge Improvement

The post-training surveys revealed a significant increase in knowledge across all three wards.

2. Nurse Feedback

Feedback from nurses highlighted they felt better informed regarding continence care and were proactively checking product use and need, resulting in a reduction in product wastage.

3. Patient Outcomes

Although the short duration limited long-term measurement, early indicators pointed to better patient outcome due to an increased focus on improved selection and fitting of correct incontinence products alongside toileting habits and skin integrity.

Conclusion

The Continence Care Challenge demonstrated the value of collaboration between healthcare providers and industry partners. By aligning training with the hospital’s goals and using data-driven evaluations, the program succeeded in elevating care standards on the participating wards. The results underscore the importance of continuous professional development and the tangible benefits it can deliver in patient outcomes. The success of this initiative serves as a model for similar partnerships aimed at addressing specific clinical challenges.
